Opening guess strategy

Best Wordle Starting Words

A strong first guess should test common letters, put those letters in useful positions, and avoid repeats. Hintwordo ranks opening words from its own five-letter word data so you can start with a guess that gives you more information.

Top starting words

These words are ranked by a combination of how often each distinct letter appears across common five-letter words and how useful that letter is in each position. Only words with five different letters are included.

How Hintwordo ranks a first guess

The ranking is not based on a secret answer list or today's puzzle. It uses Hintwordo's common-word set and scores a word higher when its letters appear frequently across that set.

Position matters too. A letter gets extra credit when it appears often in the same position across common five-letter words. Repeated letters are excluded from this top list because an opening guess usually learns more by testing five different letters.

There is no single perfect opener for every player. A high-ranked first word gives you broad information, but your second guess should react to the green, yellow and gray clues you actually receive.

What to do after your first guess

  • Keep green letters fixed in the same position.
  • Move yellow letters to new positions rather than guessing them in the same spot again.
  • Avoid gray letters unless the same letter also appeared yellow or green in that guess.
  • When several answers remain, choose a guess that tests letters that separate those possibilities.
